Choosing which ice fishing bait to use will depend on a number factors.
To determine the best ice fishing bait you will need to consider the type of fish you are after, the location you are fishing, the temperature and the fish's metabolism for the time of year.
Ice fishing bait falls into two categories. Baits and artificial baits or more commonly known as Lures. We are going to talk about Baits.
Baits can be live or dead baits. Many ice fishers will use live baits for the larger predators such as Pike and Perch. The most common baits are minnows, maggots, and worms.
#Minnows
Minnows are a good source of food for lots of fish and it is this versatility that many anglers consider minnows to be the top bait when ice fishing. Minnows come in different shapes and sizes. The smallest minnows are the 'Crappie' and can be used for almost anything.
You also have 'Fatheads' that are slightly larger and are perfect for enticing Pike, Perch and Walleyes. Shiners are larger again and as their name indicates are shiny and are also excellent baits for Pike and Walleye, but as a live bait they are not as resilient as the flathead and therefore they are not as lively on the hook when use as a live bait. Probably the most popular large minnow is the sucker. Suckers are generally used for larger Pike, Walleyes and Bass.
#Maggots
Maggots are a small bait and offer a great source of food for the smaller species and have the added bonus of coming in different types, sizes and colors. Always ensure you have a good mixture of different types and colors of maggots because what works on one day may not be the best bait the next day. By having a multitude of options, you are covering all bases.
#Worms
Waxworms and meal worms are the most popular and productive worms and can be purchased at any good bait shop. The more experienced ice fisher may even cultivate their own. This is not to save money, but they believe they can breed better worms.
Whatever fish you are after, for the greatest chance of success, always ensure you have a good mixture of fresh ice fishing bait. You will need to 'test the water' and see what is working on the day. The best ice fishers always have a mixture of baits in their arsenal every time they fish. Do this yourself and you will increase your chances of ice fishing success.
